Supervised Practice

Supervised Practice I & II (HEA624 & HEA625) serve as the foundational experiential learning courses for the HESAA program. HESAA students are required to participate in two distinct supervised practice experiences (Internship, GA or professional experience) that allow them to enhance their professional knowledge, competency and skills in a supervised setting.

Supervised Practice Goal

The goal is for the student to gain exposure to both the breadth and depth of student affairs work as well as to experience a variety of institutional types (i.e. Community College, Private, Public). Students may gain experience in developmental work with individual students or groups of students; through program planning, implementation, or evaluation; staff training, advising, or supervision; and administration functions or processes.

  • Each supervised practice should equate to no less than 150 hours of work in the field.
  • Supervised practice is typically completed through a traditional internship (approximately 10 hours of work in the field over a 15-week semester)
  • Students who secure a Graduate Assistantship may use that position to fulfill one of the supervised practice requirements.
  • Students employed full-time in higher education may also use their experience to fulfill one of the supervised practice requirements with approval from the department.
  • Students must obtain approval of their desired supervised practice experience (those considered for credit) before beginning any hours of service or work.
