What Is Credit for Prior Learning?

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is a set of well-established, researched, and validated methods for assessing non-collegiate learning for college credit. (www.cael.org). At Buffalo State, this alternative method for earning college credit is referred to as a “course challenge.”

Matriculated students may obtain credit for prior learning through an assessment of their prior experience and learning demonstrated through the required Portfolio.

A student may not receive more than 6 graduate credits through course challenge. This is a Buffalo State policy.
